With one week to go until Sydney Thunder’s first home match of Weber WBBL|12, the squad has received a major boost with the signing of international allrounder Nadine de Klerk.
South African allrounder joins Thunder
Lock in your tickets for our first home match at Drummoyne Oval! Next Sunday, November 1 at 3:40pm.
de Klerk joins Thunder after four seasons with the Brisbane Heat, arriving at the club following a career-best 12 months. The South African was a key contributor for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women's Premier League, producing a match-winning unbeaten 63 and 4/26 performance, while finishing as the competition's third-leading wicket-taker with 16 wickets.
de Klerk carried that form into The Hundred, where she scored 165 runs and claimed nine wickets in eight matches for London Spirit.
Her recent batting numbers are what caught the eye of Head Coach Lisa Keightley and Trent Copeland, most notably notching up 101 for the Western Province Women in the CSA Women Pro50 Series earlier this month.
The 26-year-old right-arm pace bowler and right-hand batter made her international debut as a teenager in 2017 and has now recorded four Tests, 64 ODI's and 87 T20I's.
Sydney Thunder Player, Nadine de Klerk, said:
"It's always exciting to be a part of a new adventure. It was a pretty easy decision to end up here.
"I'm always hoping to have a big impact, whether it's with the bat coming in lower down the order and try and finish off games or same with the ball by trying to keep it tight or taking wickets.
"I think we have a really good group, a really well-balanced squad. I obviously made some really great memories with Georgia and Lauren playing with them at RCB and lifting that trophy. Both of them are world class players, we've seen what they've been able to do, playing a massive role in us winning that competition.
"Lauren with the new ball has been exceptional for the last couple of years and Georgia is still so young it's crazy to think what she's achieved over the last couple of years. So I'm really excited to be a part of the Sydney Thunder this year."
Sydney Thunder General Manager, Trent Copeland, said:
“Nadine is one of the best allrounders in world cricket, who brings an enormous amount of experience in world cups, WPL winning teams and all major tournaments around the world.
“This is all about explosiveness with the bat, and calmness with the ball in key phases. The pairing with Laura Harris in our middle order is as dangerous as it gets in the WBBL and undoubtedly sets us apart on our best day from any team in the competition.
“We think she’s going to be a fantastic addition to our group, and we can’t wait to see what she can do in lime green this summer.”
