Left-handed power hitter Nic Maddinson has re-committed to Sydney Thunder for KFC BBL|16 following a resilient return to the game last year.
MADDO MONDAY: Nic Maddinson returns for BBL|16
Maddinson inspired cricket and sports fans across the nation last season after publicly detailing his battle with cancer, which forced him away from the game.
His courageous return to cricket, included a five-game debut season with Thunder highlighted by a match-winning 30 off 17 balls, in a 45-run partnership with veteran Chris Green, to down the Melbourne Renegades.
In 2026/27, Maddinson has stepped up his commitment to the game after taking on the NSW Blues Sheffield Shield Captain and is expected to be available for the full BBL|16 season.
Maddinson said;
"Yeah I was really pleased to return last year to the Thunder line-up.
"Obviously the year before didn't go to plan with missing the entire season, so I was really excited to play a role in that middle order.
"The win against the Renegades, being able to be involved in that partnership with Greeny to get us over the line was really special. Batting with Davey [Warner] both times he made a hundred and being able to forge a pretty good partnership with him was certainly a highlight.
"I'm really excited that Lockie's [Ferguson] back. The glimpse we got to see in the season he played was a high-class bowler, who bowls fast, swings it, and is a great death bowler... and like most Kiwi's an absolute fantastic bloke to have around the squad.
Maddinson, on working with incoming Head Coach Andrew Flintoff;
"I think most people's memories of Freddie [Flintoff] are watching those Ashes series and seeing what a competitor he was. With him coming in, I think we'll be playing a pretty positive style of cricket and hopefully a fearless one."
Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said;
"Maddo's return to the game last year was nothing short of inspiring and we're so excited he's back with us again this year.
"We saw the impact he can have in the middle order, his experience in big moments and explosiveness is crucial to what we're trying to build.
"I personally see him as a leader in this group, we've seen his new captaincy with the NSW Blues in Sheffield Shield, and he's one of the great human beings which is a big focus for Freddie and I when we're building this team.
"We can't wait to see him back this season!"
