Thunder's festive blockbusters revealed in KFC BBL|16 schedule

Sydney Thunder fans are set for a blockbuster start to KFC BBL|16, with back-to-back home matches including the first Sydney Smash of the season to launch an action-packed summer.

Led by newly appointed Head Coach Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, Thunder begin their season in the nation's capital, taking on the Adelaide Strikers at Corroborree Group Oval, Manuka on Wednesday, December 16.

The action then shifts to Western Sydney just three days later, when Thunder host crosstown rivals the Sydney Sixers at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday, December 19. One of the competition's marquee fixtures, the Sydney Smash is expected to once again attract a capacity crowd under Saturday night lights.

The festive season fun continues on Sunday, December 27, when Thunder host the third edition of The Wrap Party. The end-of-year celebration has become a highlight of the summer, featuring League-first innovations such as a drone show and LED wristbands. Fans can expect another unforgettable night of entertainment at ENGIE Stadium.

Back-to-back matches against the reigning champions, Perth Scorchers, will see the second game culminating in a blockbuster home clash on the first Saturday of the New Year at ENGIE Stadium.

Thunder’s last home fixture of the regular season will be a return to Corroborree Group Oval, Manuka to take on the Melbourne Stars on Monday, January 11.

Thunder close out the regular season on the road, with the second instalment of the Sydney Smash to be played at the SCG on Friday, January 15, before the final match in Brisbane against the Heat on Sunday, January 17.

Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said the festive period fixtures, and the return of the Sydney Smash, would give members and fans plenty to look forward to across the summer.

"This is a fixture built for our fans, we've got three blockbusters on weekends at ENGIE Stadium across the festive period. The biggest and best games in our heartland, including finals WHEN we get there.

"Canberra has become another fortress for us, we saw what Matt Gilkes and Sam Konstas did there last year in our win against the Heat, and Samsy’s heroics against the Strikers the year prior, so we're excited to open the season there and give our fans in the ACT the first chance to see the team in action. It's a great opportunity to build momentum early before returning home for what promises to be a huge Saturday night Sydney Smash.

“We’ve got a great run at ENGIE Stadium, with our Sunday night Wrap Party before the year ends, followed by the first Saturday night match of the New Year before work goes back.

"The balance of the fixture sees us spend big stretches of the summer at home in Sydney, which is exactly what we wanted for our players, fans and members. We can't wait to get the summer started and to see everyone out supporting the team."
