Sydney Thunder BBL Squad Update
Lockie Ferguson ruled out of BBL|15
Sydney Thunder wishes New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson a smooth recovery after being ruled out of KFC BBL|15 with a calf injury.
After being re-selected by Thunder in the Overseas Player Draft, Ferguson was set to rejoin Thunder for this Saturday’s BBL|14 Final rematch against the Hurricanes but will no longer take part in the season.
Ferguson’s presence on the pitch will be deeply missed after having such an immense impact last season, taking eight wickets in just six matches at an average of 21.50.
Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said he hopes to see Ferguson back in the lime green next season.
“We’re gutted that Lockie won’t be with us this year.
“Not only does he bowl 150km/h with an incredible amount of experience in all conditions, but he is genuinely one of the best humans in cricket and added so much to our squad culturally too.
“We wish Lockie all the best in the recovery ahead of the World Cup and hope to one day see him back playing for the Thunder Nation.”
England allrounder David Willey signs on
Sydney Thunder have signed experienced England allrounder David Willey as an International Replacement Player, offering the squad a versatile impact player at a crucial point of the season.
The 35-year-old is a force with the new ball, often swinging it both ways, providing an early wicket-taking threat. Willey boasts 51 T20I wickets across 43 matches at an economy rate of 8.18 and strike rate of 16.96 – almost a wicket every 2.8 overs.
“We’re incredibly excited to have David Willey join us this season,” said Copeland.
“His bowling capabilities speak for themselves – being able to deliver tight, deceptive slower balls, yorkers, and cutters under pressure. He also offers a pivotal role in the batting order as a cleaning hitting left-hander who can contribute valuable quickfire runs.
“The numbers above are the type from a player that we need to help turn our season around and David is the man to do that.”
Willey will join the Thunder squad in Adelaide next week ahead of their clash against the Strikers and will also be available for their clash against Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades.
Reece Topley departs for SA20
Sydney Thunder thanks left-arm bowler Reece Topley for his contribution during the first half of BBL|15, after joining the squad as an International Replacement Player.
After five matches in the lime green, Topley added five wickets to his BBL resume and will now depart for the SA20.
