Left-arm quick Daniel Sams has committed to Sydney Thunder for a further two seasons, taking him through to the end of KFC BBL|17 and marking 10 years with the club.
Sams strikes two-year extension
After a brief stint with the Sydney Sixers at the start of his BBL career, Sams moved to the Western Sydney side and hasn’t looked back.
With 109 wickets to his name, he stands as Thunder’s all-time leading BBL wicket-taker and ranks seventh in League history.
The 33-year-old said the support he received from the entire club after suffering a season-ending injury in BBL|14 – particularly from the fans and the playing group – reaffirmed his desire to remain a Thunder player.
“I’m extremely happy to be extending my time with Sydney Thunder,” said Sams.
“We’ve built such a strong playing group with some of the best T20 cricketers in the world, and I really believe we can be the team to beat this season.
“Last season was pretty tough not being able to finish the season on the field with the team, but the support that was shown to me not only from the club but the fans was incredible and a big reason why I was so keen to extend my time with the club.”
Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said he’s thrilled to have secured Sams’ future in lime green, admitting the club has had to fend off plenty of rival interest over the years.
“Samsy is an unbelievable player. The ultimate competitor, and very few (if any) players in the competition have the mix of assets he possesses. Left-arm, change ups, power hitting and dynamic athletic ability in the field and a player that genuinely runs at the contest in the big moments for our club. Quite simply, every team is crying out for players like this,” said Copeland.
“His influence on and off the field has been immense, and while other clubs have certainly come knocking, we’re delighted he’s committed to continuing his journey with Sydney Thunder.”
