Thunder climb BBL Draft in pick trade with Perth

With the Big Bash League Overseas Player Draft fast approaching, Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland has confirmed an exciting draft pick swap with the Perth Scorchers.

Thunder have traded Pick 16 and Pick 17 to the Perth Scorchers in exchange for Pick 12 and Pick 21 in the BBL|15 Overseas Player Draft.

Thunder’s new BBL|15 Overseas Player Draft Picks:

  • Round 1 | Pick 8 [Platinum]
  • Round 2 | Pick 12 [Platinum + Gold]
  • Round 3 | Pick 21 [Gold + Silver]
  • Round 4 | Pick 32 [Silver + Bronze]

Thunder’s overseas pre-signing players Sam Billings (BBL) and Chamari Athapaththu (WBBL) will be allocated to a draft pick on the night.

Copeland outlined the strategy behind the only confirmed pick trade ahead of this year’s Draft.

“We think there’s probably 12-15 world class players in the Draft and moving up from [pick] 17 to [pick] 12 in round two, for the cost of moving back a couple of spots in round three, was a no brainer for us,” Copeland said.

“This gives us the best chance to take a swing and come out with world class players. That’s what we’re about – upside – so we can go one better than last year.”
