Thunder Lose Out To Heat In The Eliminator

Sydney Thunder’s WBBL|09 season came to an end in Perth after Brisbane Heat got the better of The Eliminator at the WACA.

Set 170 to win, Heather Knight’s side couldn’t complete the record chase as the Heat progressed to The Challenger on Wednesday evening.

Following a season in which Thunder finished bottom of the ladder last summer, qualification for the Finals Series in WBBL09 was a huge improvement for the team in lime green and black.

At the start of the day, after the Heat got off to a flier with the bat, Lauren Smith (2-30), Hannah Darlington (3-42) and Sammy-Jo Johnson (2-31) battled hard to restrict their opponents to 8/169.

Meanwhile, Sam Bates became the 11th player to reach 100 wickets in the Women’s Big Bash League, following teammate Johnson to the milestone who reached the landmark earlier in the summer.

Chamari Athapaththu, who earlier in the day had been named Player Of The Tournament, made a valiant 40 to become the leading run-scorer for the tournament.

However, the Heat’s bowlers remained on top throughout and completed victory to move forward in the competition to face the Perth Scorchers tomorrow.
