Sydney Thunder duo Shane Watson and Usman Khawaja have both produced strong performances with the ICC World T20 fast approaching, as Australia sealed a series win with a six-wicket win over South Africa in Cape Town.
Watson was especially impressive for the Aussies at the Newlands stadium, contributing with both bat and ball in the win that saw his team claim the three match series against the Proteas 2-1.
While the Thunder all-rounder went for 22 from his two overs, he did pick up the vital wicket of the dangerous Faf Du Plessis for four, as South Africa posted 5-178 from their 20 overs.
Watson and Khawaja then got Australia’s run chase off to a flyer, scoring at more than nine an over before the first wicket fell.
Watson clubbed three sixes and two fours on his way to 42 before he was out caught by Du Plessis off Imran Tahir’s bowling.
Down the other end, Khawaja produced the stroke-play that saw him one of BBL05’s best batsman, hitting four fours and one six on his way to a quickfire 33 before he too fell to Tahir.
The pair had done enough though, with Steve Smith (44), Dave Warner (33), Glenn Maxwell (19no) and Mitch Marsh (4no) doing the rest of the work to see the Aussies to victory in the final over.
Khawaja and Watson now travel to Kolkata with the Australian team, where they will meet Thunder team mate Andre Russell in a warm-up match against the West Indies on Sunday (March 13).
Australia’s first pool match of the ICC World T20 is against New Zealand on March 18.
