Development Rookie Param Uppal is hoping to use his experience as part of the Sydney Thunder squad for BBL|07 to help propel Australia to victory in the upcoming ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.
Australia begin their preparations with two warm up matches against Sri Lanka (today) and South Africa (January 11) before facing India, Zimbabwe and Papau New Guinea in the group stages on January 14, 17 and 19 respectively.
Having already won the tournament on New Zealand soil back in 2010, their third title, Uppal believes the squad is well set to make another push.
“We have a great pool of talent. You have Jason Sangha, who scored a century against England and Will Sutherland who has played in the JLT Cup and took a four fer,” said Uppal.
“The squad has jelled really well after our four-day camp in Brisbane and now we are looking forward to getting out on the field for that first warm up game.”
For Uppal, it has been a breakthrough year, having co-captained the Australian U19s in the series against Sri Lanka and being promoted from the Thunder Academy alongside Sangha, who took a Thunder Foundation Scholarship.
“It’s all been about maturing as I am getting older and taking as much experience as I can from the first class players in the set up, such as Watto (Shane Watson) and KP (Kurtis Patterson),” said Uppal.
