Sydney Thunder has named a 15-player squad for this weekend’s Rebel Women’s Big Bash League fixtures against the Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat at Drummoyne Oval.
After consecutive narrow losses to the Perth Scorchers, captain Rachael Haynes said the group is determined to bounce back this weekend.
“It’s just about staying positive,” said Haynes.
“It’s going to be two tough games this weekend. We know the Sixers and Heat have got really dangerous top orders and we saw that first-hand in the opening round of the season.
“We’ll have to bowl really well but the positive thing for us is that we’ve been doing that. We’ve been really nailing our power plays so we’re feeling really confident.
“You’re always going to go through some ups and downs, particularly in this format, but we know that our game is good enough and that we’re good enough to beat the opposition we’re coming up against so that’s our goal this weekend.”
Pakistan all-rounder Nida Dar top-scored with 43 runs in Tuesday’s loss at the WACA.
“It was nice to see Nida get an opportunity, she’s been chomping at the bit to get out there and really contribute with the bat,” said Haynes.
“She’s improved since she’s joined our team and she’s growing in confidence too. We know her all-round ability and we’ve got full confidence in her, and I think that will really come into play this weekend.”
Talented 16-year-old Phoebe Litchfield, who scored an unbeaten half-century when Thunder met the Heat at North Sydney Oval earlier this season, returns to the squad after missing both matches against the Scorchers due to school commitments.
“We’re really excited to have Phoebe back," said Haynes.
"I think the partnership her and Alex Blackwell have formed in the middle has been pretty key for us so hopefully she can come back in and continue to do what she’s been doing."
Tickets for this weekend are on sale now at sydneythunder.com.au/tickets, with free entry for kids.
“We’re really looking forward to playing at home this weekend,” said Haynes.
“We always get really great support at Drummoyne Oval. The crowd is generally split between Thunder and Sixers supporters so hopefully the Thunder Nation can outnumber them this weekend."
Thunder play the Sixers (15 November, 7:10pm) and Heat (16 November, 7:10pm) at Drummoyne Oval this weekend.
Both matches will be broadcast live on the Seven Network and Fox Cricket.
