Sydney Thunder’s preparations for the upcoming Rebel Women’s Big Bash League season continued on Friday afternoon with a second practice match against the Sydney Sixers at Waverley Oval.
Led by Hannah Darlington, Thunder notched its second win of the summer, defeating the Sixers by seven wickets.
Stand-in Sixers captain Erin Burns won the toss and elected to bat first.
A strong performance in the field saw Thunder restrict the Sixers to 9/82 in the first innings.
Sam Bates was the best of the bowlers with 3/10 from her four overs. Lisa Griffith was also impressive with 2/13.
After a shaky start that saw Naomi Stalenberg and Phoebe Litchfield both caught within the first two overs, New Zealand international Rachel Priest (31) and former Australia vice-captain Alex Blackwell (37 not out) combined to steady the chase.
Blackwell hit a six to secure victory for Thunder in the ninth over.
Play continued for the remaining 10 overs, with Blackwell going on to score an unbeaten 90.
Sydney Thunder is set to open the first ever standalone WBBL season with a blockbuster Sydney Smash against crosstown rivals the Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval on Friday 18 October.
