Sydney Thunder has named its 13-player squad for their upcoming KFC Big Bash League game against the Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium.
Thunder will give 19-year-old Baxter Holt a debut behind the stumps after Matt Gilkes suffered an injury while batting in training yesterday.
“Matthew has a hip muscle strain, confirmed via scans this morning,” said Sydney Thunder Physiotherapist Murray Ryan.
“Matthew will hopefully be available for the remaining games of the season, depending on his response to rehabilitation.”
Another Thunder keeper Jay Lenton, who fractured a finger on his left hand in Thunder’s game against the Renegades at Spotless Stadium on 22 January will see a specialist in Sydney today to further determine the extent of his injury.
Gurinder Sandhu has taken eight wickets this season, moving him ahead of Fawad Ahmed (38) to be the club’s leading wicket taker with 39 wickets.
“The vibe’s really good around the group,” said Sandhu.
“Coming off the back of that victory against the Scorchers, that was a really good run chase from our batters so I think everyone’s feeling confident and ready to go for the next game.
“We’re playing at their home ground now so that’s different but for us we’re just trying to go out there and play our best cricket. We know what we have to do to win and that’s what we’re going to try and do.
“We know that we probably need to win the next one or two games at least out of the next three and if we can do that we should be sitting near the top two or three.”
Jono Cook and Arjun Nair have both been recalled to the squad while Sam Rainbird misses out.
