Sydney Thunder’s uniform for WBBL|06 will feature the Walkabout Wickets artwork created by Aboriginal artist Aunty Fiona Clarke.
Clarke’s great-great-grandfather was one of the pioneering Aboriginal players who toured England for a series of matches in 1868, a group of brave men who defied the social norms of the time – and a treacherous journey to the other side of the world – to become the first-ever Australian sporting team to play abroad.
Their remarkable tour of the UK was re-traced in 2018 by Australia’s modern-day Indigenous players, including Thunder’s own Hannah Darlington.
Walkabout Wickets is a tribute to those pioneering cricketers of 150 years ago and acknowledges the long relationship Australia’s First Nations peoples have had with cricket.
Check out the video below for an insight into Thunder’s special shirt presentation at an Indigenous meeting place, the Muramar Healing Space in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct.
Sydney Thunder is set to open its WBBL|06 season with a blockbuster Sydney Smash against crosstown rivals the Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval on 25 October.
