Sydney Thunder’s Daniel Sams has extended his contact a further one year, seeing him at the club until at least the end of BBL|10.
The 26-year-old said his decision came down to the promising future of the club and the support of the Thunder Nation.
“I think we’ve got a really solid base, obviously our squad is quite young, but we put up some really good performances last year,” Sams said.
“We weren’t quite able to make the finals, but I think if we can just keep building the blocks, things are going to turn for us and I think we can put up some strong performances, get into the finals and even win the tournament.
“The Thunder Nation is a great crowd. They just want to be involved, they’re really supportive and really friendly.”
The former Sydney Sixer was a welcome addition to the Thunder set up in BBL|08.
Sams finished as Thunder’s leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets at an average of 21.07 and scored 175 runs at a strike rate of 137.80.
On two occasions he was named Player of the Match, including on debut when he scored 34 runs and claimed 3/5 to lead Thunder to victory at Manuka Oval.
Head Coach Shane Bond is looking forward to seeing Sams continue to develop his skills over the next two years.
“We’re really delighted to extend his contract and know he’s got all the capabilities of being a very fine player,” Bond said.
“We put him into some challenging positions with both bat and ball. It was a real learning season for Dan, but I really enjoyed his work ethic and attitude, and there’s no doubt he’s got fantastic talent and I’d love him to be part of the organisation long term.
“When you’re in the position when you bat sixth and bowl at the death, you’re going to have some tough days at the office, but he doesn’t shy away from a challenge and always wants to get better.
“Now for him transitioning into year two of being a full-time professional, I’m really excited about him continuing to grow his game.”
