Gilgandra Junior Super Clinic

All-rounder hosted Junior Super Clinic in Gilgandra

Daniel Sams has reflected on his visit to Far West NSW as part of Sydney Thunder’s ongoing commitment to regional engagement.

The star all-rounder visited local cricket clubs and schools in Dubbo, Wellington and Coonamble.

Sams and NSW Blues squad member Baxter Holt also hosted a Junior Super Clinic at McGrane Oval in Gilgandra.

“The highlight for me has been being around the kids, playing cricket and seeing the joy on their faces. It’s been really cool,” Sams said.

“Being out in the Far West, in towns like Coonamble, Gilgandra, Gulargonbone and Dubbo, you witness first-hand how hard families are doing it out here.

“There’s not much green grass around, and all the dams are dry, without water. It can be a bit confronting.

“That’s why being out here has been so rewarding for myself and Baxter, it’s provided an opportunity for us to give back to the Thunder Nation community.”

President of the Gilgandra Junior Cricket Club Joe Spora hopes the success of the Super Clinic will encourage more children to play cricket this summer.

“It was absolutely awesome, we don’t get opportunities like this too often,” Spora said.

“We had 100 kids which was a great turnout. We had about 80 participants on most weekends last year, so it was great to see even more at the Super Clinic today.

“Hopefully off the back of this initiative, our registrations and club can continue to grow into the future as we want all our children playing sport and staying active.

“It’s tough at the moment. It’s really tough. It’s the third year of drought. Third year of no income for a lot of families such as the farmers, the businesses in town are struggling.

“Trauma that is experienced is passed on through to the kids as well, so it’s been tough that’s why these days are so great.”

Sydney Thunder’s purpose is to be a loved club that inspires and unites the Thunder Nation.

With engagement stretching across western Sydney and regional New South Wales, Sydney Thunder exists to give back to the community.

Underpinning all community initiatives is a focus on inclusiveness, ensuring cricket is a sport for all.
