Sydney Thunder has signed right-arm quick Rene Farrell on a two-year contract.
This will be Farrell’s third season with the Thunder Nation and is the leading wicket-taker in the Rebel Women’s Big Bash League.
Farrell has been playing with the Surrey Stars in the Kia Super League, and became just the second player to take a five-wicket haul earlier in the year, taking a match-winning 5-26.
The 30-year old helped lead the Surrey Stars to second place on the league table and a semi-finals appearance.
“I’d love to be leading wicket-taker of WBBL03,” said Rene Farrell.
“However, if I can bowl in partnership with the likes of Nic Carey, Belinda Vakarewa and Maisy Gibson and they are picking up the wickets, I think the Sydney Thunder will be travelling well.
“The culture of Sydney Thunder is one that you just want to keep returning back to. What I am looking forward to the most this year is entertaining our loyal fans and holding the trophy up at the end of the season after losing it to our cross-town rivals in WBBL02.
“Playing under captain Alex Blackwell, who in my mind is one of the best captains in the world, and having class coaches such as Joanne Broadbent and Dom Thornely is really exciting and I can't wait to see where they can take this group.”
Sydney Thunder General Manager Lee Germon is looking forward to Farrell making an impact this season.
“I believe that Rene is very unlucky not to be playing international cricket,” said Sydney Thunder General Manager Lee Germon.
“She showed in the Kia Super League and the WNCL that she is one of the form pace bowlers in the country.
“She is experienced with very good match awareness and variations and is a wicket-taker. This is vital to our team as taking wickets is the key to restricting opposition teams in this format of our game. She is a very useful all rounder being more than handy with the bat.
“Rene will, no doubt, spearhead our attack and provide outstanding support and leadership to the bowling group. I am very pleased that she has committed for another two seasons to us.”
Sydney Thunder are offering Members the chance to enjoy FREE coach travel to Sydney Thunder’s Sydney Smash against the Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval on 10 December.
Alex Blackwell and her side will be looking for the support of the Thunder Nation as they face last year’s reigning WBBL Champions the Sydney Sixers (2pm start).
There will be family fun actives, including music, competitions, face painting and the Mazda Thunder Bus along with members of the club’s BBL side who will be supporting their club mates in the important clash.
