Sydney Thunder has signed right arm quick Nathan McAndrew for the upcoming KFC Big Bash League ahead of a Thunder Development XI taking part in the T20 Sydney Quin Series, involving teams from Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand.
McAndrew has been part of the club since playing two games during Thunder’s championship winning season in BBL|05, including playing in the semi-final against the Adelaide Strikers. Following a full contract in BBL|06, McAndrew was then named as a replacement player last season for Pat Cummins.
“With the fourteen games this year it’s very exciting for me as a bowler,” said Nathan McAndrew.
“After not getting any game time over the last couple of years the increase in games will create more opportunities for me.
“I think its really important that we have some strike bowlers who can swing the ball around and take some wickets during the powerplay. With our three spinners, two of them are all-rounders so that leaves room for a couple of quicks to get in there and take some wickets early on.”
The 25-year old has also played three First Class games in New Zealand and is part of the Cricket NSW Transition Squad, which provides professional specialist training focused towards T20 cricket.
The Thunder Development XI, formally known as the Sydney Thunder Academy will be joined in the tournament by teams representing the Auckland Aces, Lahore Qalandars, Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes between 5 November and 9 November.
“Nathan has great all-round skills,” said Sydney Thunder Head Coach Shane Bond.
“He’s been around the squad for a number of years and has started the season strongly. With an extended season there will be more playing opportunities for the group and I’m looking forward to seeing him play in the upcoming Quin Series.
“The Quin Series is a great opportunity to watch the players react in a live game situation. Ultimately good performances are what counts and while there will be more playing opportunities with an extended season, I know the players focus will be on being selected for the opening game against the Melbourne Stars.”
The Thunder Development XI will be coached by Sydney Thunder Assistant Coach Shawn Bradstreet and open their campaign on Monday 5 November against the Lahore Qalandars at Pratten Park (3pm start).
