Sydney Thunder has signed right-arm quick Nathan McAndrew for the upcoming KFC Big Bash League season.
The 26-year-old enjoyed his best season to date in BBL|08, playing four games and bowling at an economy rate of 11.17.
He has been part of the club since playing two games during Thunder’s championship winning season in BBL|05, including playing in the semi-final against the Adelaide Strikers.
McAndrew said he’s excited to remain at the club and continue to build on his skills under the guidance of Head Coach and former New Zealand Test bowler Shane Bond.
“I still have a lot of things to work on, but I definitely felt like my game went up a couple of levels than it had been in previous years so I’m looking to work on that and try to become more consistent,” McAndrew said.
“It was awesome to be able to work with Bondy. He was obviously such an incredible bowler in his own right and just brought so much experience to the group.
“It was really good to have a bowling minded coach which is something we hadn’t had in previous seasons. For me, he just gave me so much clarity around my role and that really gave me confidence to go out and execute.”
Bond said the re-signing was reward for effort after McAndrew’s promising BBL|08 campaign.
“I was really pleased with Nathan. I thought last year, for us and in the domestic second XI competition, he just kept getting better and better. He bowled quick and we know he can also score lots of runs,” Bond said.
“With our fast bowling group now, we’ve got great depth. We’re really pleased to have Macca back in and around our group again. We loved his personality and the way he went about his business. He’s a great team guy and he can bowl quick, so he’s a great signing for us.”
Last week the club announced that experienced batsman Callum Ferguson will captain Sydney Thunder in BBL|09. This follows the signing of emerging star Ollie Davies in July.
Sydney Thunder is set to open its ninth KFC Big Bash League campaign against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on 17 December, before playing its first game in Sydney on 2 January.
