Haynes and Bates outstanding in third straight win

04 November 2020

Sydney Thunder captain Rachael Haynes and Sam Bates have each starred in Sydney Thunder's win over the Perth Scorchers

Thunder captain Rachael Haynes and spinner Sam Bates were two of the stand outs for the Sydney Thunder in their 24-run victory over the Perth Scorchers at Blacktown International Sportspark on Wednesday registering a third-straight win to start WBBL|06.

Left-arm finger-spinner Bates returned a brilliant 3-9 from four overs in a complete bowling performance by the Thunder attack bowling out Perth for 120.

Thunder recovered from 3-22 to reach 4-144. Haynes (61 not out) and England skipper Heather Knight (57) shared their second 100-plus partnership this week.

Knight and Haynes fell 14 runs short of the 122 they posted in the 58-run win against the Adelaide Strikers last Saturday, including Knight’s 83 from 39, which was a new highest score for a Thunder batter in the Women’s Big Bash.

Knight (2-29) and pace bowler Sammy-Jo Johnson (2-25) were the other multiple wicket takers. Johnson taking the crucial wicket of former Brisbane Heat team mate Beth Mooney bowling the Australian T20 opener for 61 from 49 balls towards the end of the chase.

Bates claimed the other key wicket of New Zealand allrounder Sophie Devine (7) in the fourth over.

South African speedster Shabnim Ismail produced a perfect yorker, not long after, to dismiss No. 3 Megan Banting (1) and Perth was 2-25.

Beth Mooney was resolute throughout the chase, but wickets continued to fall for the Scorchers, including a brilliant catch in the deep by Ismail.

Just days after completing her HSC, swing bowler Kate Peterson made her WBBL debut in the win which puts the Thunder on top of the table.
