A late flurry of wickets with the ball kept the Scorchers to 131 but a disciplined bowling performance from the Perth side resulted in a fourth loss for the Thunder in WBBL|06.
Sydney Thunder were bowled out for 97 in the 19th over in reply to 8/131.
Alex Blackwell Medallist Hannah Darlington was excellent for the home side. The 19-year-old seamer claimed 3-21 from her four overs.
She was also on a hat-trick at one stage.
The Scorchers lost 6-37 towards the end of their innings but consistent wickets throughout Thunder’s chase proved key to victory.
England captain Heather Knight continued her terrific form and with her at the crease there was hope of a Thunder win.
However, when she departed for 44 courtesy of a brilliant outfield catch by Nicole Bolton, the equation became much harder. Knight is the third leading run-scorer in WBBL|06 with 295 runs at an average of 42.14.
With the ball for the Thunder, left-arm finger spinner Sam Bates also claimed an impressive 2-20 from her four overs to take her WBBL|06 tally to 13 wickets. One of her wickets included New Zealand and Scorchers’ captain Sophie Devine (45).
PERFORMANCE OF THE MATCH
After taking perhaps the biggest wicket of her career the previous evening, when bowling Australian captain Meg Lanning, Darlington claimed another three wickets keeping the run rate at just five per over.
The Thunder will be back at Sydney Showground Stadium on Tuesday night against the Melbourne Renegades, looking to reverse the narrow two-run loss at Hurstville Oval earlier in the tournament. Live on cricket.com.au, Kayo Sports and listen live on ABC Grandstand.
