Looking to bounce back from a narrow two run loss against the Melbourne Renegades, the Sydney Thunder reversed that result defeating the Hobart Hurricanes by the narrowest of margins at Hurstville Oval on Sunday, with Heather Knight leading the way.
Thunder won by one run. Star signing Knight consolidated herself at the top of the WBBL|06 run-scorers list with an unbeaten 61 from 49 balls, then followed that up with 2-12 from her three overs of off-spin, to play a leading role in the win. The Hurricanes making 7/128 in reply to Thunder's 7/129.
Former Thunder opener Rachel Priest was outstanding for her new club remaining 83 not out from 64 balls.
Knight now has 226 runs for the tournament at an average of 56.5. She passed 1,500 Women’s Big Bash runs against the Renegades on Saturday.
South African Shabnim Ismail’s excellent spell of 2-13 from four overs straight, at the start of the innings, kept the Hurricanes’ run rate in check and was the ideal start that captain Rachael Haynes was after from her International fast bowler.
Just as the Hurricanes were starting to increase the momentum, however, it was Knight again who produced the clutch moment. Her off-spinning breaking through with Nicola Carey (12) hitting one straight to Haynes.
The Hurricanes could not keep Knight out of the game as she claimed the catch to remove South African Chloe Tryon (4) and then bowled the Hobart captain Corinne Hall, for a first ball duck.
The equation was a run a ball with 17 deliveries remaining. Up stepped spinner Sam Bates (1-20), continuing her outstanding form, claiming the wicket of Sasha Moloney (3) and only conceding three runs. She has 10 wickets to her name from seven matches in WBBL|06 at the amazing average of 6.5.
Alex Blackwell Medallist Hannah Darlington (2-29) held her nerve taking 1-9 in the final over to clinch the win.
PERFORMANCE OF THE MATCH
The England captain continued her outstanding form with the bat in hand hitting five fours in her composed 61 not out. It was her third half-century from seven matches in the Thunder green.
