Heat prevail by eight wickets over the Thunder

12 November 2020

The Brisbane Heat successfully chased down the Sydney Thunder's 9/111 inside 17 overs on Wednesday night as WBBL|06 passed the half way point

The Brisbane Heat defeated the Sydney Thunder by eight wickets on Wednesday night at Blacktown International Sportspark No. 1.

The Heat made 2/115 in reply to the 111 posted by the Thunder, who despite the loss, maintain second position on the WBBL|06 ladder on run rate.

Leg-spinner Amelia Kerr was outstanding for the Heat claiming 4-20 from her four overs followed up by a definitive half-century from opener Georgia Redmayne with 59 not out from 45 balls.

One of the highlights of the night was a brilliant grab by Rachael Haynes at mid-on. The Thunder skipper taking a a spectacular, juggling AFL-like mark to remove the opposite captain Jess Jonassen (10) and give Jonassen's former team mate Sammy-Jo Johnson (1-24) her first. At that point, the Heat were 2-29 inside the powerplay.

After winning the bat flip, the Thunder found it tough on a low pitch at Blacktown.

England captain Heather Knight (25) and Rachel Trenaman (27) both made handy contributions in a low scoring contest.

Grace Harris was the wicket the Thunder needed early to defend the small total and it was Sam Bates (1-25) who delivered again. Hannah Darlington taking the catch in the deep to remove the danger batter for 4 and give Bates her 11th wicket for WBBL|06.

But Redmayne and youngster Georgia Voll (31 not out) comfortably guided the Heat home from that point on.

Rachel Trenaman.
