Thunder defeat Strikers to stay in top four

21 November 2020

In another tight one, Sydney Thunder defeated the Adelaide Strikers by five wickets with two balls to spare

The WBBL|06 Finals dream remained alive for the Sydney Thunder on Saturday afternoon at Drummoyne Oval sealing victory with two balls to spare.

Sydney Thunder chased down 134 to win finishing 5/136 with Rachel Trenaman (38) and captain Rachael Haynes (30) among many valuable contributions.

Player of the match pace bowling allrounder Sammy-Jo Johnson set up the win with yet another three wickets conceding a little more than a run a ball.

After opening pair Trenaman and England International Tammy Beaumont (23) got the Thunder chase off to the perfect start reaching 42 without loss in the powerplay.

The Strikers fought back to slow the Thunder run rate whilst still taking wickets.

Needing a-run-a-ball from the closing five overs, it was up to Haynes and teenage star Phoebe Litchfield (16 not out) to get the Thunder home and that they did.

Earlier, the Thunder made a great start with the ball.

Sammy-Jo Johnson snared the key wicket of Strikers' opener Tahlia McGrath (12) which was soon followed by the even bigger wicket of Laura Wolvaardt (8) to the bowling of fellow South African speedster Shabnim Ismail. Both catches were taken by Lauren Smith.

Opener Katie Mack (58 from 52) and West Indian Stafanie Taylor (33 from 29) combined to add 71 for the third wicket, before a clinical run out broke the partnership and flurry of late wickets ensued to finish the innings.
