Sydney Thunder’s Baxter Holt is set to make his First Class debut against Tasmania in the final round of the JLT Sheffield Shield at Blundstone Arena starting Wednesday.
The 19-year-old has been selected to replace NSW Blues captain and wicketkeeper Peter Nevill who has not travelled to Hobart due to the birth of his first child.
Holt said the debut will cap off a massive year in his young career to date.
“Futures (League), Australian Under 19s and bit of the Big Bash as well… the experience I’ve gained out of that has been phenomenal and I’ve been very lucky to bat as well as I have this year and keep as well as I have been,” Holt said.
Holt made his KFC Big Bash League debut for Thunder against the Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium, with Jos Buttler (international duties), Jay Lenton (injured) and Matthew Gilkes (injured) all unavailable.
The teenager made the most of his chance on the big stage. He completed two important dismissals before smashing 37 runs from 28 balls to keep Thunder in the contest.
During the 2018/19 Toyota Futures League, Holt made 310 runs from five matches for NSW Metro at an average of 51.67, with a high score of 151. He also claimed 10 catches and one stumping behind the stumps.
Thunder fast bowler Liam Hatcher is also a chance to make his First Class debut after being named in the 13-player squad, while Kurtis Patterson will captain the Blues in Nevill’s absence.
