Sydney Thunder wicketkeeper-batter Matt Gilkes has blasted 82 from just 51 balls as the NSW Blues claimed victory over Western Australia in the Marsh Cup at Drummoyne on Wednesday.
Gilkes, playing in just his second match for NSW after making his debut on Monday, hit seven fours and four sixes in the Blues’ total of 6/348.
Thunder all-rounder Arjun Nair was impressive with the ball, claiming 3/59 from 10 overs including the vital wickets of Shaun Marsh (33) and Hilton Cartwright (74).
Daniel Sams, who missed the first game of the Marsh Cup due to injury, also featured for the Blues.
Gilkes’ knock helped NSW claim its first victory of the Marsh Cup following earlier defeats to Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.
Gilkes also enjoyed a stellar start to the NSW Premier Cricket season blasting 166 not out from 115 balls for UNSW.
The NSW Blues will now switch focus to Sheffield Shield cricket with the red ball season set to get underway against Queensland at the Gabba next Thursday.
Sydney Thunder is set to open its ninth KFC Big Bash League campaign against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on 17 December, before playing its first game in Sydney on 2 January.
