Maisy Gibson and Jason Sangha have been recognised as the two best young players of the season by Sydney Thunder Members.
Gibson, 22, had a standout season for Thunder in the Rebel Women’s Big Bash League. The leg spinner collected 12 wickets from 11 innings at an average of 18.25. On three occasions she claimed three wickets, with her best figures of 3/18 coming against the Brisbane Heat at North Sydney Oval.
Gibson also grabbed one of the best catches of the season at Manuka Oval against the Hobart Hurricanes.
Thunder enjoyed another successful WBBL season, finishing second on the ladder and reaching the semi-finals for a second consecutive year.
Despite falling short to eventual champions the Brisbane Heat, Gibson said the semi-final was one of her favourite moments of the season because of the support at Drummoyne Oval from the Thunder Nation.
“My highlight was making the semi-final. Even though we did lose, to reach the finals and be part of such a special day at Drummoyne was just amazing,” she said.
“When we played at Showgrounds Stadium too, it was great to have that support and have everyone get behind us as much as they do for our BBL team.”
Sangha, 19, gave the Thunder Nation plenty of reasons to be excited for the future of the club, scoring 178 runs from 10 innings, including a match-winning half century on debut.
He is now a regular fixture of the Thunder lineup, but it wasn’t long ago that Sangha, who grew up supporting Thunder, was on the other side of the fence.
“I really enjoyed it when the players would come out and sign my mini bat or shirt so I try to give back as much as I can,” he said.
“And I know what it feels like when players go out of their way to start a conversation, you feel like you have a personal connection so I tried to make sure I got to know the fans on a bit more of a personal note, especially at Showgrounds Stadium where you tend to see familiar faces.
“I just wanted to make sure I thanked them all for being massive supporters of us.”
