Sanjay Krishan and his son Aryan have been selected to represent the Fijian community at the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup Finals Day on Sunday 3 November 2019.
Attending the community trials at Bankstown Memorial Oval, the pair participated in the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup for the first time.
For Aryan, the opportunity to represent the Fijian community at the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup will compliment his existing cricket commitments with Westfields Sports High School and the Bankstown District Cricket Club.
According to Sanjay, through cricket, he and Aryan can connect to their community and celebrate their culture.
“It means the world to me to represent my birth place. Fiji is just an island and when I was growing up, always wanted to give back something. Now through the wonderful Thunder Nation, I can fulfil that,” Sanjay said.
“Aryan is born here and is a true-blue Aussie, seeing his passion to want to play for Fiji is a dream come true for me.”
Whilst the cricket important, Sanjay also realises the benefit that the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup can provide to give back to his community, both locally and abroad.
Cricket has provided a platform to promote social cohesion and celebrate cultural diversity.
“Fiji has given me so much. Shown me how to respect, love and appreciate the little things in life,” Sanjay said.
“Cricket is not a major sport in Fiji, Sydney Thunder is giving us the opportunity to connect with the Fijian community, which as a father I thought would only be possible to do if I took Aryan to Fiji.
“Cricket, and any sport in general, is a universal language. It brings people from all walks of life together, we believe the greatest tool for peace and harmony is sport.”
The HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup continues across September and October, with free community trials held for communities across the Thunder Nation. Individuals are encouraged to register for their community trials, where a team will be selected to represent their community at the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup Finals Day in November.
