Sydney Thunder leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed has signed a new two-year contract with the club.
Ahmed’s taken 15-wickets in his first two seasons including taking 4 for 14 against the Sydney Sixers at the SCG in January 2017, the best figures of any bowler in the club’s history.
“I’ve had an amazing experience, I’m extremely happy to be part of the club,” said Fawad Ahmed.
“I have made some really good friends and enjoyed the past two seasons in Sydney, which is a great city. Hopefully we can win the championship again and I can keep making contributions for the team.
“I love spending the summer in Sydney, it’s such a multi-cultural city. It’s very easy for me to go out for food or to the mosque. It’s my favourite time of the year.”
Ahmed is an ambassador for the club’s Leadership Program, which uses cricket to engage and inspire students through cricket.
“There’s a large population in the Western Sydney suburbs from the sub-continent and I think it’s important to use cricket for good,” said Ahmed.
“I want to get involved in the community and maybe help produce some players for Sydney Thunder and Australia but more importantly to bring different communities together.”
Sydney Thunder Director of Cricket Michael Hussey credits Ahmed for playing an important role in the side.
“Fawad showed his class last season, really putting teams under pressure with his leg spin,” said Sydney Thunder Director of Cricket Michael Hussey.
“His four wickets at the SCG will be long remembered by Thunder supporters and it was a good result for a fine season.
"Fawad plays an important role working with our young spinners and we’re looking forward seeing him once again in green this season.”
Sydney Thunder open their KFC Big Bash League campaign against the Sydney Sixers at Spotless Stadium on 19 December (7.40pm start).
