Ocean 12 have won the annual ‘Don’t Give Up, Give Back’ T10 tournament, held in Parramatta last weekend.
The team, made up of players from the Sri Lankan community, finished the day undefeated, proving too strong for the Afghan Australia Youth Association, Hazara Cricket Club, Lankan Islanders and NSW Police.
The NSW Police Cricket Team used the opportunity to connect with the community and also hone their skills before heading to the United Kingdom to compete in the World Police Championships.
The ‘Don’t Give Up, Give Back’ T10 tournament is run to celebrate culture and community through cricket.
Founded by Abdul Razzaq, the purpose of the event is to bring people together and promote social cohesion.
“Sport bring communities together and it's a wonderful tool to use for many purposes. That's what we are using it for with the ‘Don't Give Up, Give Back’ event. As well as for love, peace and humanity,” he said.
On a personal level, cricket has helped Abdul connect with his community and build long-lasting connections in Australia since arriving from Pakistan in 2010.
“Cricket helped me a lot to connect with different communities and cultures and I also use it as language, especially when my English was very poor,” he said.
“Cricket helped me to help others become strong leaders. Thank you, Sydney Thunder, for your wonderful and amazing support.”
