10 January 2019

All money raised will go towards providing meals for those in need

Sydney Thunder celebrated their commitment to making a real and meaningful difference to the community at Tuesday’s WBBL and BBL games at Spotless Stadium.

The club has led a number of successful local initiatives including the Thunder Nation Cup, Thunder Leadership Program and the Mazda Thunder Bus, and this season has partnered with OzHarvest with the aim to provide 10,000 meals to those in need within the Thunder Nation.

Thunder supporters have embraced the initiative, with the club already raising enough funds to provide 19,553 meals with three BBL home games remaining, nearly double the target.

At Tuesday’s games, Thunder players wore a specially designed playing shirt to raise awareness for the club’s growing work within the community.

The thumbprint design is reflective of Thunder’s commitment to leave a mark on the community, acknowledging that people from many different backgrounds and cultures make up the Thunder Nation.

Each member of the club’s BBL and WBBL squads has signed their limited edition playing shirt to be auctioned with the money raised going towards raising funds to provide more meals to those in need across the Thunder Nation.

All shirts start at $160 with every $1 raised helping to provide two meals.

“The community shirt that our players wore at Spotless Stadium represented the importance of the Thunder Nation to our club,” said Sydney Thunder General Manager Lee Germon.

“We are committed and driven to inspire and unite our community and together with our partners continue to make this happen. The community match illustrated and showcased this focus and was a huge success. We are very proud to have already raised enough money to provide close to 20,000 meals and thank OzHarvest for partnering with us to achieve this.”
