Andre Russell playing for the West Indies

The Sydney Thunder has secured the signature of one of the most electrifying players in world cricket.

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell will join the Thunder Nation in BBL05 as the club’s second international player.

Russell is a regular in the West Indies national team, with 51 ODIs, 34 T20 Internationals and a single Test to his name.

He is renowned for his big hitting and fast scoring, with an ODI strike rate of 130.81 and a T20 International strike rate of 125.74.

The 27 year old is equally as damaging with the ball, taking 76 wickets across all international formats.

At domestic level, Russell’s game goes to another level, with a strike rate of 167.61 in T20s, and more than 200 wickets with the white ball.

This sort of form saw him named Kolkata Knight Riders best player in this year’s IPL, where he scored at just under two runs per ball throughout the tournament and took 14 wickets.

In addition to his talents on the field, Russell is also a recording artist, releasing music under the moniker ‘Dre Russ.’

Russell was last in Sydney as part of the West Indies team for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, and is looking forward to returning to the city to join the Thunder.

“Sydney is a beautiful city, and I can’t wait to get back to Australia to join the Thunder for the Big Bash,” said Russell.

“I’m excited about joining the club, I’ve seen the squad that Mike Hussey and Paddy Upton are putting together and it is very strong.

“I’m looking forward to playing in the same side as Jacques Kallis and Shane Watson, who are two of the most damaging all-rounders in the white ball game.

“I think this team can go all the way in BBL05, and play some really exciting cricket while we do it.”

Sydney Thunder General Manager Nick Cummins believes Russell’s signing is one of the final pieces of the puzzle for the club’s BBL05 squad.

“Andre’s high-powered game is a valuable addition to our line up,” said Cummins.

“His ability to clear the ropes is well known and his bowling has improved considerably in the last 12 months.

“It’s an exciting prospect to have four international all-rounders in Russell, Watson, Kallis and McDonald in our BBL05 squad.”
