Sydney Thunder Secure Key Trio Ahead of WBBL Finals

Sydney Thunder have scored a massive coup a two days out from the Weber WBBL|10 finals with the re-signing of three key players Sam Bates, Hannah Darlington, and Anika Learoyd—strengthening the club's core and setting the stage for long-term success.

Western Sydney’s favourite team, Thunder will take on the Hobart Hurricanes in the Knockout Final on Wednesday night at Drummoyne Oval.

Sam Bates

Sam Bates, the club’s longest-serving player, has been a mainstay since the WBBL|01 season. This year, Bates has continued her outstanding career, leading the wicket-taking tally on multiple occasions and proving to be a critical asset in the Thunder’s campaign. Her evergreen presence and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments make her a cornerstone of the team.

Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland praised Bates’ contribution to the team:

“Sam Bates has been extraordinary this season. She’s our golden arm and has been pivotal with the ball, taking big wickets and setting the tone in the power play. A one-club player since day one, Sam is a fan favourite, and her re-signing for another two years is fantastic news for the Thunder Nation.”

Sam Bates has signed a two-year deal which will see her remain in lime green until the end of WBBL|12.

Hannah Darlington

Hannah Darlington is the link between the club’s recent past and the future of Sydney Thunder. Known for her composure and leadership, she is a crucial part of the Thunder’s foundation moving forward.

Trent Copeland highlighted Darlington’s importance to the club:

“Hannah Darlington, despite still being in her early 20s, feels like a veteran of the game with the leadership and composure she brings. She’s been a captain of the club and is absolutely integral to our future. Her energy and availability to connect with fans are everything we want this club to represent.”

Hannah Darlington has signed a three-year deal which will see her remain in lime green until the end of WBBL|13.

Anika Learoyd

Anika Learoyd is another rising star who has impressed with her performances this season. As part of Thunder’s exciting crop of young players, Learoyd embodies the club’s vision on and off the field.

Copeland praised Learoyd’s potential:

“Anika has been brilliant as part of our young core and is everything we want this club to represent—talent, accessibility, and connection with our fans. She’s shown immense promise and is an essential part of the Thunder’s long-term plans.”

Anika Learoyd has signed a two-year deal which will see her remain in lime green until the end of WBBL|12.

The re-signing of Bates, Darlington, and Learoyd is a significant boost for Sydney Thunder as they head into the finals and underscores the club’s vision of building a winning culture around its core group of players.

“These three signings add to a formidable group of players who are crucial to our identity and future success. Hopefully, their efforts will propel us to lifting the trophy this season,” Copeland added.
