will play for the Sydney Thunder
in the cross town derby against the Sydney Sixers at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday night.
Khawaja was originally ruled out of the match having been chosen to lead the Chairman’s XI against Sri Lanka in Canberra.
However, he has been released from that match a day early to enable him to play with the Thunder.
His inclusion helps offset the loss of Sydney Thunder Captain Michael Clarke
, who has aggravated an ongoing back problem.
Clarke is extremely disappointed to be missing his one-off opportunity to lead the Sydney Thunder against the arch rivals.
“I am deeply disappointed that due to my injury I will not be on the field captaining Sydney Thunder team in the opening BBL|02 match on Saturday night”, Clarke said.
Even though he won’t be playing Clarke will be at the match supporting the Thunder. He will be in the Sydney Thunder playing kit, advising the players, signing autographs for members and fans and generally helping the team any way he can.
“I will be present at the SCG to provide strategic input and support for the team and I will encourage all Thunder fans to join me in supporting our team.”
In addition to the return of Khawaja, the Sydney Thunder will be further boosted by two international arrivals.
New Zealand Player of the Year, Martin Guptill
, has arrived to open the batting against the Sydney Sixers.
Later this week Pakistan T20 specialist, all-rounder Azhar Mahmood
, will be here to add further strength to the Sydney Thunder’s line up.
Next week will see the much awaited arrival of the world’s best T20 batsman, Chris Gayle
The modern day “master blaster” Gayle, will suit up for the Thunder in game two against the Melbourne Renegades at ANZ Stadium on Friday, December 14.
